The Different Methods of Auto Transport

When one mentions “car transport,” the first thing that comes to mind is an image of a trailer filled with all types of cars slowly making its way through freeways. In reality, there are a number of ways by which cars can be transported.

Just as man can travel by air, sea or land, cars can also be moved via air, land and sea. The difference, however, lies in the frequency by which each method is used.

Although it might seem that transporting cars via air may take the lead when it comes to long distances as well as travels to another country, it is actually the least used method. This is only made useful when transporting presidential limousines, racecars, concept cars and exotic car models. Other personal cars are usually transported using ships.

Transporting a car via ship is the second most popular method utilized by car transporters. Car-carrying ships can usually hold about 8,000 cars and deliver them to countries abroad as well as states outside the mainland of the USA. Oftentimes, delivery is done via the terminal-to-terminal method. Keep in mind that you have to stay on the schedule prearranged to your by the car transporters.

The most popular method of transporting a car and other vehicles is via trailers on ground. These are the trucks that you oftentimes see slowly traversing on the roads containing a number of cars. Trailers can either be an open one or an enclosed one. Your choice would depend on the type of car you would want transported, your budget and the risks you are willing to undertake. Your auto transporter would most likely give you a choice between terminal-to-terminal pick-up and delivery as well as door-to-door.

In all the different methods, however, the essential process basically remains the same. You would still need to indicate, in the Bill of Lading, the current status of your car including any existing damages before handing it over to the auto transporters. When the car arrives at its destination, you then have to check if your car’s present condition is the same as it was when you handed it over to them.
